It is with great sadness that we have heard of the recent passing of Ron Stanway.

Ron’s links with mounted games go back to the days of the early eighties when Butlins sponsored the Prince Philip Cup for the Pony Club. In those days Ron was the General Manager of Butlins in charge of Entertainment and Promotions and he became a real Games enthusiast.

Ron was a part of MGAGB from the initial formation of the organisation and was the Treasurer for the newly formed MGAGB from 1984 until 1990. During this time he was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Organisation.

When he retired from Butlins in 1990 he took over the role of Assistant Director under Norman Patrick (Director) organising the running of the Association. In all of this he was ably assisted by his wife, Sheila who took over the role of Treasurer.

Ron was a wonderful commentator with a deep and clear voice and had the knack of injecting excitement into his commentary. He was also a very methodical worker and many of the office systems that he introduced into the administration of MGAGB are still in use today.

Ron resigned from his work with MGAGB in December 1993 and I was fortunate enough to become his successor.

He was always on hand with tips and advice and continued to come to competitions to commentate until ill health made it difficult for him to do so.

The family have decided to have a small private funeral for Ron (12 people) that will be held on 6th April. His wife, Sheila, will be organising a memorial day for him in May/June.Details will be posted here when known.

Sheila’s address for anyone who wants to send sympathy cards is Apt 7, Bryn-y-Bia Lodge, Bryn-y-Bia Road, Craigside, LLANDUDNO, Conwy LL30 3AX

RIP Ron- a true Mounted Games enthusiaist and a gentleman.
